Location: Ten Mile River Scout Camps / Camp Keowa
Founded in 2008 as an augmentation of the Shooting Sports Committee of Greater New York Councils, Boy Scouts of America, by a dedicated group of Scouters to foster and promote shooting sports by educating the public, especially our youth, and promoting safety and ethics.
All members are BSA and NRA Certified Range Safety Officers and or Firearms Instructors.
It should be relatively warm during the trip so no need to pack a very warm coat. Besides the shooting, this will be a standard camping trip, so bring a tent.
There will be shooting of ranged weaponry including 22CAL rifles, 20 GA shotguns, 50 cal Muzzle Loading Rifle, BB guns, and archery, etc.
If you qualify you can also compete in competitions that can get you awards. There is an award for every activity type at the event, as well as one for the most fish caught.
Last weekend, the scouts traveled to camp Keowa to participate in the shooting sports weekend.
We traveled 3 hours to camp Keowa on Friday and immediately set up camp and slept.
The next day, we woke up and had delicious brunt bacon and cold scrambled eggs for breakfast! Then we went to the shotgun range and practiced our shot like a true American and recorded our results for the award ceremony. After that, we took a lunch break, but we forgot to bring cold cuts!!! But luckily, thanks to Mr. Daly and Ms. Soo, we were able to get lunch. Before we went to the rifle range, the scouts went to the tomahawk range to visit Mr. Wong who volunteered.
Next, the scouts went to the rifle range and shot rifles at paper targets to record for the award ceremony. After that was done, the scouts went fishing and with not bait and no bobber. One scout was able to get a fish! When we finished cooking chili for dinner, we headed back to eat it and once we finished, we attended the award ceremony. Three scouts won 4 awards. After that, we headed back to our campsite and started a fire and prepared skits for the campfire.
Overall, the trip was extremely fun (especially because of the guns) and I would like to give a round of applause to our newest scout, for volunteering to cook all three meals.
