Adventure Trek

50 Miler Patch

When and Where

When: August 24-29, 2023, 6:00 am — 6:00 pm
Nights: 5

Location: White Mountains, New Hampshire

20230909212237-7ee7fc7f-me

The White Mountains are a mountain range covering about a quarter of the state of New Hampshire and a small portion of western Maine in the United States. They are part of the northern Appalachian Mountains and the most rugged mountains in New England. Several of the higher peaks contain an Alpine tundra.

This is our annual 50-mile adventure trek trip for 2023. This time, instead of committing to one form of transport, we will be biking, canoeing, and backpacking interchangeably. It requires a lot of planning, and we will have many trips to practice for this trip.

⚠️ ⚠️ ⚠️ Weather ☔ ⛄ 🏔

The widget above shows some weather in the area. And you may see it is not as we used to have in NYC in August. The real weather at the average elevation of our trip will be even worse.  On August 11, 2023 3 PM, at the top of Washington Mountain according to weather.gov:

The image on the right is from the Live Camera.

The following illustration is taken from Mount Washington Observatory. You may see how the temperature changes with the elevation.  We will spend 3 days above 4500 ft.

To understand what we should be ready for, at the end of August you may use this monthly report

This is a very useful site to see forecasts for the next 6 days at the base and at the peak: Mountain Forecast.

Overview

The plan has been modified by eliminating the aquatic/rowing portion in order to allow more days to complete the backpacking.

The Trek consists of two (from 3) sections.
(a) Backpacking - 30 miles/5 days of the Presidential Traverse. This is still very strenuous given the 9,000 feet of elevation gain. Satisfies the last trek requirement for Backpacking MB.
(b) Cycling - 20 miles/1 day of the Shore Parkway Greenway upon our return to Bay Ridge. Satisfies the most trek requirement for 50 Miler Award.

RSVP. Please let us know ASAP. This is not for everyone but if you are capable and ready, you will be challenged, enjoy extended above-tree-line views, and create lasting memories. You do not have to participate in both sections.

Cost. Minimal, assuming you have the appropriate backpack and sleeping bag. You are responsible for your own meal plan and shopping.

Questions. Once the roster is complete, we will host several planning meetings - managed by and led by youth.

Sleeping in huts is out of the question. According to Outdoors.org and using the Madison Spring Hut as a reference it would cost our group $800 (with 2 zeros) for one night. I still recommend bringing pocket money just in case, but we will most likely be sleeping in tents

Due to the versatility of this trip, it is vital that you pack properly.

Some of the things that you need include,

Destination: Appalachia Trailhead, Randolph, NH 03593

(!) Fill up gas beforehand to have a full tank it should last a one way trip so you might need to fill up on gas during the road too.
