50 Miler Patch

When and Where

When: August 2-6, 2022, 8:00 am — 8:00 pm
Nights: 4

We are biking the C&O Canal Trail and biking 184.5 miles over the course of 5 days.

This trip will be extremely hard and require a lot of planning to be carried out successfully.

We will need to come up with a route to take, we need to train, gather all our needed equipment, come up with a meal plan, and Discuss the requirements for the 50-Miler Award and the C&O Canal Historic Trail Award.

Everybody participating NEEDS to practice and train to ride a bike for long periods of time. This is vital for your completion of the trail as it is over 150 miles long. Our Training meets will happen regularly as decided by the person chosen to be in charge of them.

The 50-Miler award requires you to take part in the organization and planning of the trip in question, so everyone who is looking to get the award NEEDS to take an active part in our planning meetings and discussions.

Packing

This is probably thee most vital part of the whole trip,

Historian's notes

Last week we completed a 5-day bikepacking trip.

But wait! What is a bikepacking trip? A bikepacking trip is essentially a combination of biking and camping along a trail over a few days with the necessary equipment without showering, drinking well water, and using porta potties while mosquitoes eat you alive!

We started our bikepacking trip on August 2nd in Georgetown, a neighborhood in Washington, DC, and biked along the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal Trail for 184.5 miles over a span of 5 days. We had to endure harsh weather, multiple flat tires, and infuriating detours. The worst day was day four when a detour forced us to hike our bikes, with heavy gear, uphill during a thunderstorm! Despite the obstacles we faced, we had a great time and learned much about ourselves and others.

On August 6th, we completed the trail in Cumberland, Maryland. One of the major reasons we were able to complete the trail was adult leaders. Without their careful planning and sheer will to bike extra miles to move the cars, this trip wouldn't have been possible. This trip without a doubt will be one that I will remember forever, and I highly recommend trying it out if you want to have a great time and test your mental and physical strengths.
