Nova Awards

Nova Awards are an exciting part of the scouting experience, designed to encourage curiosity and interest in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). These awards provide scouts with opportunities to explore STEM fields in a fun and educational way. Due to their unique focus and the additional efforts required to earn them, Nova Awards are highlighted in a separate section from other awards.

What Are Nova Awards?

Nova Awards recognize scouts who explore STEM topics and complete related merit badges and activities. These awards are part of the BSA's effort to promote STEM education and inspire the next generation of scientists, engineers, and technologists.

Nova Awards

These are the introductory awards that cover a broad range of STEM topics. Scouts earn these by completing specific STEM-related merit badges and additional requirements.

Supernova Awards

These are more advanced awards that require significant effort and dedication. They involve earning additional merit badges, conducting independent research, and working with a mentor.

Earning Nova Awards

To earn a Nova Award, scouts must complete a series of requirements that include earning specific merit badges and participating in hands-on STEM activities. The process involves both theoretical learning and practical application, ensuring that scouts gain a comprehensive understanding of the subject.

Nova Awards are relatively new compared to traditional scouting awards and require additional efforts to achieve. They are designed to complement the existing merit badge program by providing scouts with structured opportunities to delve deeper into STEM subjects. By earning Nova Awards, scouts not only expand their knowledge but also develop critical thinking, problem-solving, and research skills.
